PLCC Paradise Lakes Country Club

This was our little paradise, home away from home. Two recreational properties, located in the Mount Baker area of Washington State,  were acquired by our parents in 1972. It is about 1 hour and 10 min  drive from Vancouver. We first parked our tent trailer there, then moved up to a 16' and later to a  24' trailer. In 1981 we decided to build cabins, one for our family and one for my brother Gottfried's family. Our family has spent over 900 nights there. This is our launching pad for Mt. Baker area hiking, skiing, shopping trips to Bellingham, Seattle, la Conner, swimming, tennis, (court and pool are across the street), biking, running, pick nicking, golf  and many wonderful days just relaxing and reading. Unfortunately, over the past 10 years, this recreational property has become a "residential" area with most Canadians moving out and "poor" Americans moving in. There is a large contingency of "Russians" now resident here. Also, the PLC Club was disbanded in 1999 and the area is just part of Whatcom County. The pool is now closed and not maintained at all with lots of frogs residing there with their nitely seranade.  Some photos of construction and various visitors.

Update in year 2002: Gottfried and family have sold their cabin in April/02. Our cabin was sold on May 24. This chapter in our lives is now closed.

cabin1.JPG (128672 bytes) Here is the final product. Next door's cabins is identical except the cedar siding runs horizontally. There is running water, toilet (septic tank) and shower, 110v power.
cabin2.JPG (89557 bytes) The foundation was poured in 1982. We purchased the arches in Richmond and transported them across the border and started on the frame in May 1983. We (Paul, Gottfried, Peter & help from others) took the entire month of July off to build them and put the cabins into lock up state.
cabin3.JPG (53176 bytes) Construction during July, 1983. It was a rainy month! One would expect to finish the roof first, but could not work on it due to the rain and the necessary inspection required. So most of the inside was built first.
helma90.JPG (105619 bytes) Helma Weinhara (Peter's Aunt) visiting us in 1990. Gottfried, mother, Faye and Helma out for a walk in the area.
barb91.JPG (75029 bytes) Barbara Hruby stayed with us for 1 month back in 1991. Her English improved dramatically during her stay as she learned all the proper Canadian slang. Here is Ryan. Kelly and Barbara with Mt Shuksten in the background, in the Mt Baker Ski area.
diet_gretl.JPG (78465 bytes) Dieter and Gretl Wegenstein (Gretl was born a Pollhammer and is a cousin) visiting us in 1992. Dieter, Faye and Gretl out for a stroll.
inge_rheinhart.JPG (67311 bytes) Rheinhart and Inge Hoenisch (Paul's nephews) visiting in 1997. Rheinhart, dog Sasha, Faye and Inge hiking on Table Mountain (Mt Baker area) with view of Mt. Shuksten behind.
smoke_pff.JPG (38421 bytes) Occasionally Faye joins Fred and Peter for some suds at the "Holly Smoke A Tavern" pub about 1 mile away from the cabin. Sitting outside on the veranda in the sun. Taken in 1997.
